Donald Trump will continue as chairman of the Gaza Board of Peace even when he is no longer US president, according to the organisation’s charter released this week. The document sets out governance rules for the new body, which is intended to oversee Gaza’s postwar reconstruction and political transition.

The charter states that the chairman can be removed only if he resigns voluntarily or is declared incapable by the board’s executive committee. Members of that committee are appointed by the chairman, giving the role significant independence from changes in political leadership in Washington.

The Gaza Board of Peace was announced earlier this month as part of a US-led framework following the ceasefire that ended major fighting in Gaza late last year. US officials have described the board as an international coordinating body that will guide reconstruction funding, economic planning and security arrangements during a transitional period.

Under the proposed structure, day-to-day administration in Gaza would be handled by a separate Palestinian technocratic authority, while the Board of Peace would provide oversight and international coordination. How authority would be divided between the two bodies has not been fully detailed.

The charter provision allowing Trump to remain chairman beyond his presidency has drawn attention from diplomats and analysts, some of whom have questioned the concentration of power within the board. Others note that the arrangement reflects Trump’s desire to keep personal control over an initiative closely associated with his foreign policy agenda.

Trump has said continuity is necessary for long-term reconstruction efforts and has privately argued that frequent leadership changes would undermine investor and donor confidence. Supporters say his continued role could help maintain US engagement even after a transition in administrations.

The president has also invited several foreign leaders to associate themselves with the board, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to people familiar with the matter. There has been no public response from the Indian government.

International reaction to the board has been cautious. Some countries are understood to be evaluating whether to participate, while others have raised concerns about how the new body would interact with existing international institutions, including the United Nations.

Israeli political responses have been mixed. Some officials have welcomed a stronger international role in Gaza’s reconstruction, while others have expressed concern about security coordination and the board’s authority.

At present, the Gaza Board of Peace has not begun operations on the ground. Its influence will depend on whether major donors and regional players choose to engage with it. Trump’s continued leadership ensures the initiative remains closely tied to him, even after his presidency ends.
