US President Donald Trump appeared to react angrily to a heckler during a visit to Ford Motor Company’s River Rouge complex in Dearborn, Michigan, after a worker shouted “pedophile protector” as he toured the factory floor, according to video footage.

Footage first published by TMZ shows Trump turning toward the direction of the voice, appearing to mouth an expletive before raising his middle finger and continuing to walk. The individual who shouted is not visible in the clip, and portions of the audio are unclear.

The incident occurred hours before Trump was scheduled to address the Detroit Economic Club as part of his visit to Michigan, which aimed to highlight domestic manufacturing and investment.

The outburst comes amid renewed scrutiny of Trump over the Justice Department’s handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in jail in 2019. The remark appeared to reference Trump’s past association with Epstein, a subject that has remained in public focus following delays in the release of federal records.

Trump faced criticism last year after resisting calls to release the Epstein-related files, despite earlier campaign comments suggesting they would be made public if he returned to office. A bipartisan group of lawmakers later pushed legislation compelling the Justice Department to release the files, a bill that passed with overwhelming support and prompted Trump to back the effort.

Despite the law’s passage, the Justice Department has missed multiple deadlines, including a mid-December requirement to release the files with limited redactions and to brief Congress on the redaction process.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has not been accused by any Epstein survivors. He has previously said he ended his relationship with Epstein years before Epstein’s initial arrest.

The White House defended Trump’s reaction to the heckler. Steven Cheung, assistant to the president and White House director of communications, said the exchange was provoked.

“A lunatic was wildly screaming expletives in a complete fit of rage, and the President gave an appropriate and unambiguous response,” Cheung said.

The roughly 30-second video shows Trump pointing several times toward the factory floor before making the gesture and moving on. Members of the traveling White House press pool did not witness the exchange, initially raising questions about the footage, though the White House later confirmed its authenticity.

The episode marked another instance of Trump responding bluntly to heckling in public. He has previously been caught on camera using profanity, including during remarks last year expressing frustration over continued fighting between Israel and Iran despite a ceasefire.

The factory tour, intended to showcase American manufacturing, briefly veered off message as the clip circulated widely online.
