Trump condemns Sydney Hanukkah event shooting, slams ‘radical Islamic terrorism’: 'All nations must stand together...'

The Republican urged that all nations must stand together against the evil forces of radical Islamic terrorism

US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump used a White House Hanukkah celebration event to call on nations to form a united front against radical Islam, days after a deadly mass shooting in Australia left 15 people dead.

Addressing a gathering, Trump said, “Let me take a moment to send the love and prayers to our entire nation, to the people of Australia, and especially all those affected by the horrific and anti-semitic terrorist attack that took place on a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney.”

“We're joined in mourning all of those who were killed, and we're praying for the swift recovery of the wounded; some are very horrifically wounded,” he continued.

The Republican further urged that all nations must stand together against the evil forces of radical Islamic terrorism.

About the Sydney shooting

Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed reportedly opened fire on a Jewish festival at Sydney’s famed Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, in an attack that shook the nation and intensified fears of rising antisemitism and violent extremism.

Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son ‌emerged ‌from a coma on Wednesday after also being shot by police.

"He will be charged formally, if he hasn't been so already, I would expect that will take place over the coming hours," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a podcast interview on Wednesday morning.

The men accused of carrying out Sunday's attack had travelled to the southern Philippines, a region long plagued by Islamist militancy, weeks before the shooting that Australian police said appeared to be inspired by Islamic State.

Albanese and the leaders of some of Australia's states have pledged to tighten the country's already strict gun laws in what would be the most sweeping reforms since a shooter killed 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania in 1996. Mass shootings in Australia have since been rare.
