As concerns mount over dwindling weapons reserves following the recent conflict with Iran, the Trump administration is set to meet top US defence contractors at the White House on Friday, Reuters reported.
According to Reuters, the discussions will centre on ramping up weapons production as the Pentagon moves to replenish stocks depleted by strikes on Iran and other military operations.
Five people familiar with the plan told Reuters that executives from major firms have been invited, speaking on condition of anonymity as the talks are private.
Companies expected to attend include Lockheed Martin and RTX, the parent company of Raytheon, along with other key suppliers to the US military.
Pressure on weapons stockpiles
The planned meeting underlines growing urgency in Washington to rebuild weapons reserves. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, the United States has drawn heavily on its stockpiles, supplying billions of dollars’ worth of artillery systems, ammunition and anti-tank missiles.
The recent conflict involving Iran is said to have consumed longer-range missiles, exceeding the types of munitions provided to Kyiv, further straining supplies.
Push to speed up production
At least one source told Reuters that officials are expected to press manufacturers to accelerate output to meet military needs.
Neither Lockheed Martin nor the Pentagon nor the White House immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment. RTX declined to comment.
In a social media post on Monday, Donald Trump said there was a “virtually unlimited supply" of US munitions and added that wars could be fought “forever," and very successfully, using those supplies.
