Three Indian nationals, including a teenager, have been arrested in Canada and charged in connection with a shooting incident allegedly linked to extortion in Surrey, British Columbia, police said.

The accused - Harjot Singh (21), Taranveer Singh (19), and Dayajeet Singh Billing (21), were taken into custody in the early hours of February 1, 2026. Their names and photographs were released on Monday after charges were formally filed.

All three have been charged with one count of discharging a firearm into a place under Section 244.2(1)(a) of Canada’s Criminal Code. They have been remanded in custody until at least February 5, pending their next court appearance. Police said the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has also been engaged as the accused are foreign nationals.

According to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), officers responded to reports of gunfire and a small fire outside a residence in the Crescent Beach neighbourhood at around 3.50 am on January 31. At the time, police teams assigned to Project Assurance were patrolling the area in coordination with the Major Crime Section.

Officers searched nearby streets and located three suspects shortly afterward near 28 Avenue and 140 Street. The men were arrested after entering a rideshare vehicle.

Surrey Fire Services extinguished a small fire near a fence on the property. While the house did not suffer fire damage, it was confirmed to have been struck by gunfire. The residence was occupied at the time of the incident, though no injuries were reported.

The SPS Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing. Police said additional charges may be laid as evidence continues to be reviewed.

Authorities noted that the incident comes amid a rise in extortion-related crimes in Surrey and the wider Lower Mainland region. Project Assurance was launched in response to this trend, alongside the Surrey Extortion Reward Fund, established in September 2025, which offers rewards of up to $250,000 for information leading to charges and convictions.

Last week, two other Indian nationals were arrested in Surrey in a separate extortion-linked shooting case. Harshdeep Singh (20) was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present, while Hanspreet Singh (21) was charged with occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm was present.

Police agencies including the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service and the Delta Police Department assisted in the response.
