Investigators are continuing to examine all possible angles in the deadly fire that tore through a luxury ski resort in Switzerland during New Year celebrations, killing at least 40 people, even as local authorities have ruled out a terror attack so far, sources told CNN-News18.
While Swiss police have said there is no evidence at this stage to suggest terrorism, intelligence agencies believe the incident cannot be viewed in isolation. According to top intelligence sources cited by CNN-News18, the tragedy has triggered wider scrutiny because it comes just days after the deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, which has sharpened global focus on lone-actor violence and ideologically driven threats in Western countries.
Officials said that in the current security climate, even incidents that initially appear accidental are being examined more closely for broader patterns. The recent Bondi Beach attack, in which 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram opened fire on a large crowd during a Jewish Hanukkah event, killing 16 people, has heightened such concerns. Investigators believe the attackers pledged allegiance to Islamic State before the assault.
The Sydney attack also sparked a diplomatic dispute after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rejected claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Australia’s earlier recognition of a Palestinian state had fuelled the antisemitic violence.
Against this backdrop, intelligence officials say Switzerland holds particular strategic sensitivity. Despite its long-standing neutrality, the country is seen as a high symbolic value target because it hosts major international institutions and diplomatic infrastructure, including several bodies linked to the United Nations.
Sources told CNN-News18 that Indian intelligence agencies are in close coordination with European counterparts to assess emerging security trends following the Gaza war. Officials are tracking concerns that sections of the global Muslim diaspora are increasingly being exposed to narratives portraying the conflict as “collective punishment,” with such messaging being redirected toward Western societies.
Investigators are also examining whether extremist propaganda linked to the Palestine issue is circulating through encrypted and semi-open online platforms. These include channels used to share emotionally charged videos, sermons and indirect calls for action, which intelligence agencies say can act as catalysts for lone-actor violence.
Swiss authorities have stressed that the investigation remains open-ended. Until the precise cause of the fire is established, officials say all possibilities, including accidental causes, criminal negligence and ideological motivations, will continue to be examined.
