An armed man in his 20s was shot and killed by the United States Secret Service after he allegedly tried to unlawfully enter a secured perimeter at US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, officials said on Sunday.
The incident occurred early in the morning at the high-security property. Trump was not present at the resort at the time.
Confirming the development, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a post on X:
"An armed man was shot & killed by U.S. Secret Service agents & @PBCountySheriff after unlawfully entering the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago early this morning."
Local law enforcement authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the breach attempt and the subsequent shooting.
Mar-a-Lago, located in West Palm Beach, serves as Trump’s private residence and is protected by multiple layers of security, particularly when he is in town.
US President Donald Trump has faced several assassination plots and attempts in recent years, underscoring heightened security concerns around the Republican leader.
Earlier this month, 59-year-old Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to assassinate Trump at a Florida golf course in September 2024, just two months before the US presidential election. Authorities said the planned attack was foiled before it could be carried out.
Routh’s plot came only weeks after a dramatic assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. During that incident, 20-year-old Matthew Crooks opened fire, with one bullet grazing Trump’s right ear.
The rally shooting left one attendee dead and shocked the country. Security personnel immediately shot and killed Crooks at the scene. His motive has not been publicly established.
The Pennsylvania attack marked a significant turning point in Trump’s political comeback, strengthening support among his base and reshaping the tone of the election campaign.
