Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a precision strike carried out with a Blue Sparrow missile, according to multiple defence reports analysing the attack. The weapon is believed to have been launched from an Israeli fighter aircraft and followed a high altitude flight path before hitting a target inside Iran.

The reports say the missile climbed to the edge of space before descending toward its target. This type of trajectory is designed to make interception difficult because the missile briefly exits the denser layers of the atmosphere before re-entering at very high speed.

The Blue Sparrow missile is part of Israel’s Sparrow family of air launched ballistic targets developed by the company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems together with Israel Aerospace Industries. The system was originally designed to simulate ballistic missile threats during tests of Israel’s Arrow missile defence programme. Over time, variants of the missile have also been studied for operational strike roles.

According to defence analysts cited in reports by outlets including Reuters and The Jerusalem Post, the missile used in the strike flew a steep lofted trajectory. After being launched from a fighter jet, it climbed to a very high altitude before descending at hypersonic speed toward the target compound where senior Iranian political and military leaders had reportedly gathered.

Weapons that follow this kind of trajectory are harder for air defence systems to stop. When a missile rises to near space before re-entering the atmosphere, it compresses the available interception window for ground based defences. The speed of the final descent also reduces reaction time for radar operators and interceptor missiles.

The strike that reportedly killed Khamenei took place amid an escalating confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States. Iranian state media confirmed the death of the country’s supreme leader following the attack, though details of the weapon system used were not officially acknowledged by Tehran.

Israel has not publicly confirmed operational details of the strike. Israeli authorities rarely comment on the specific weapons used in cross border operations, particularly when advanced missile systems are involved.

If confirmed, the use of a Blue Sparrow missile would mark one of the most high profile operational deployments of the Sparrow family of missiles. Analysts say the strike highlights the growing role of air launched ballistic weapons that combine aircraft flexibility with the speed and reach of ballistic trajectories.

The incident has intensified tensions across the Middle East and raised concerns about further military escalation in the region as Iran and its allies consider possible responses.
