After various Bangladeshi newspaper officers were attacked recently, another media house has also been threatened.

On December 21, several youths visited the office of Global TV Bangladesh in Dhaka and demanded the removal of its head of news, Naznin Munni, failing which it would meet the fate of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

The youths claimed that Naznin, a popular TV anchor, was an Awami League supporter.

They reportedly warned that if Munni was not dismissed, the channel’s office would be set on fire, similar to the recent attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

In a Facebook post, Naznin Munni later confirmed the threat saying seven to eight people came to her office and issued the warning. She said the threat was part of a wider pattern of intimidation against journalists.

"Around 7-8 people came to my office in the name of the city unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and threatened that if I do not quit my job, they will set fire to the office like Prothom Alo and The Daily Star," Naznin said in her post.

Naznin told Prothom Alo that she was not in the office when the incident happened. She said the youth met the managing director and complained that the coverage of the death of Osman Hadi was not adequate.

According to News18, the visitors first complained about Global TV’s coverage of the death of Shahid Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha. They then demanded Munni’s removal. Munni has strongly denied having any political links.

Hadi (32) was a prominent leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 student-led uprising. He acted as a spokesperson for Inquilab Mancha, or “Platform for Revolution”, and was planning to stand as a member of parliament for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the Bijoynagar area of the city in the upcoming elections, expected in February 2026.

He died in a hospital in Singapore, where he was receiving treatment after being wounded in an assassination attempt on December 12.
