A strange blue shimmer over rural Aomori Prefecture left residents confused and uneasy on Wednesday night and within minutes, the region was shaken by a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake, India Today reported.
Videos of the unusual scene were shared all across social media. The videos showed brief flashes of electric blue streaking across the sky. For many watching from their windows, the glow appeared and vanished before they had time to process what they were seeing, reports said.
India Today further reported that the unuals scene was seemingly caused by a rare phenomenon called the earthquake lights or EQL, which have also been sometimes reported before or during major earthquakes around the globe.

The US Geological Survey describes these lights as “sheet lightning, balls of light, streamers, or a steady glow” that have been documented during seismic events. However, the agency has admitted that there has been no scientific explanation as of now that explains the unique lights during or before quakes.
Some seismologists argue that many supposed EQL sightings could simply be electrical failures, transformers blowing, power lines snapping, sparks from infrastructure reacting to ground movement. Others insist the more credible videos contain patterns that cannot be explained by man-made accidents.
One team studying decades of global reports found a recurring pattern: most documented EQL cases accompany quakes above magnitude 5.0 and tend to occur in areas where the Earth’s crust is spreading or tearing apart, geological settings where steep faults can funnel electrical currents upward at high speed. Certain rocks, such as basalt and gabbro, can release charged particles when squeezed under intense tectonic pressure, creating a burst of light once they reach the surface air.
Researchers also point out that these flashes rarely appear after seismic activity. They show up right before a rupture or as the quake is happening, hinting that the lights may be tied to the buildup and sudden release of stress inside the crust.
Whether the Aomori lights were true EQL or something more ordinary will take time to determine. But for people who watched the sky turn an unnatural shade of blue just moments before the ground convulsed, the science is almost secondary.
Once again, one of Earth’s strangest and least understood signals has resurfaced - a brief, ghostly glow preceding a violent shift deep below.
