An Indian restaurant in Minneapolis has shut down indefinitely amid heightened tensions linked to an immigration crackdown by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city.

Curry Corner, located in Northeast Minneapolis, announced the decision on Instagram, saying it “will be closing down until further notice” due to safety concerns for its staff.

“Due to ongoing safety concerns in Minneapolis, we’ve made the very difficult decision to temporarily close to protect our team,” the restaurant wrote.

The closure comes as Minneapolis remains on edge following the launch of “Operation Metro Surge” in December 2025, which saw thousands of armed, masked Department of Homeland Security personnel, including ICE and Customs and Border Protection agents, deployed across Minnesota. Federal authorities have described the operation as lawful immigration enforcement, but state and local leaders, as well as residents, have criticised it as a “militarised” crackdown.

The restaurant acknowledged that shutting its doors would cause financial strain for its staff and owners. “This closure brings a major financial hardship to our small, family-owned business,” Curry Corner said, adding that a GoFundMe fundraiser had been created to help support employees and keep the business afloat. The fundraiser has raised more than $25,000 toward its goal.

Despite closing operations, Curry Corner has continued to show support for the local community. In videos shared on social media, staff members were seen distributing free samosas and meals to anti-ICE protesters in downtown Minneapolis.

“We are closed but we are still going to go out and support our community,” the restaurant posted. In another message, it added: “Today we took Curry Corner into downtown Minneapolis to support our community. We went out to share warm samosas and meals with those protesting and standing up for what they believe in.”

The restaurant ended its post with a message of solidarity, saying, “Our hearts are with our community. We see you, we support you, and we will always show up the best way we know how – with love and food.”

The ICE operation has sparked widespread protests in Minneapolis, particularly after two fatal encounters involving Renee Nicole Good and Alex Jeffery Pretti, as well as reports that two children, aged two and five, were detained during enforcement actions. The incidents have intensified scrutiny of federal immigration tactics and fuelled growing unrest across the city.

Curry Corner’s announcement drew an outpouring of support online, with customers calling the restaurant their “favourite” and expressing hopes it would reopen once conditions improve.
