The United States views India as a crucial alternative to China for global supply chains, US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer said, highlighting the country’s manufacturing capacity and workforce as key advantages.
Speaking to Fox News, Greer highlighted India’s growing role in the global trade realignment when asked whether it is the right destination for US companies looking to move operations out of China.
“Many companies are already going in that direction. India has manufacturing capacity. It can be a good source of imports as long as it is fair,” he said.

Greer described India as a potential “way station” for American supply chains as companies explore options beyond China. His remarks come amid Washington’s intensified efforts to decouple critical supply chains from Beijing, signaling India’s increasing importance in US economic strategy.
He said India could play a key role in helping American companies diversify supply chains beyond China, while the US continues to prioritize keeping critical supply chains as close to home as possible.
“It can be. We know that many companies are already going in that direction. As you mentioned, we want our supply chains in the United States to be as close to home as possible. But we also know it’s a process. When you shift from globalisation to a more resilient and secure economy, you will eventually need to reallocate supply chains. India can be a way station for that,” Greer told Fox News.
He added that American interests remain the top priority, but India’s large workforce and manufacturing capacity can make it a reliable partner in supply chain realignment. “Of course, American manufacturing and the American worker must come first. But to the extent that we import from other countries, India can be a good source, as long as it’s balanced and fair,” he said.
Greer also expressed confidence in India’s commitment to the recently announced interim trade framework between the two countries. “India is really committed. They have started expanding some of their commitments with respect to purchases. They’ve already rolled back some of the digital services tax that affected us, and they’re moving to reduce tariffs. This is going to be a really important deal, and it’s going to reverberate for many years to come,” he said.
The United States and India unveiled the framework for an Interim Agreement on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade earlier this month. Both nations reiterated their commitment to the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), originally launched by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025.
