New signage bearing President Donald Trump’s name is being installed on Friday at Washington, DC’s main performing arts venue, Kennedy Center, following a board vote a day earlier to rename the institution in his honour.
Trustees have voted to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
The move, however, has raised legal questions. It remains unclear whether the board has the authority to rename the centre, which Congress designated a memorial to John F. Kennedy in 1964, a year after his assassination.
The decision prompted criticism from members of the Kennedy family, with Kennedy’s niece Maria Shriver calling the effort to rename the memorial after Trump “beyond comprehension.”
Trump, meanwhile, on Thursday promoted what he described as “record-setting numbers” among donors and outlined plans to seek additional congressional funding for the centre.
“We’re saving the building. We saved the building. The building was in such bad shape, both physically, financially and every other way. And now it’s very solid, very strong,” he said.
Since returning to office, Trump has overhauled the performing arts centre, removing the board of trustees and ousting its chairman. He was later elected chair of the centre after appointing several new board members.
The new signage marks the second time this month that a federal building has been renamed after Trump. His name was added earlier this month to the US Institute of Peace, an independent agency that was also dismantled as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal government.
