Iran’s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has issued a strong response to the US President Donald Trump’s threat over Tehran’s handling of protests in the country, warning that any interference will be “forcefully” rejected.
Araghchi claimed that the protests by the Iranian citizens were their right and it was caused by a few economic issues. “Those in Iran impacted by transient exchange rate volatility have recently been peacefully protesting, as is their right,” the foreign minister said in a post on X on January 2.
Araghchi said the protests were largely peaceful barring few isolated incidents of violence. He said a police station was attacked and Molotov cocktails were thrown at police officers.
“Given President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard within US borders, he of all people should know that criminal attacks on public property cannot be tolerated,” the minister said defending police action.

Araghchi said Trump’s message is “reckless and dangerous” and likely influenced by those who fear diplomacy.
Moreover, he warned that any interference in the West Asian nation’s internal affairs will not be tolerated. “As in the past, the Great People of Iran will forcefully reject any interference in their internal affairs. Similarly, our Powerful Armed Forces are on standby and know exactly where to aim in the event of any infringement of Iranian sovereignty.”
The remarks come after Trump had earlier said if Tehran uses force to “violently kill peaceful protesters”, the US would come to their rescue and Washington was already “locked and loaded” and “ready to go”.
The US government has not declared publicly how it will “intervene” if at all. However, the comments have triggered warnings from Iranian officials.
Iran’s parliament speaker issued the most direct warning to the US yet, saying Washington’s military bases in the West Asian region would be considered legitimate targets if any interference is seen.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s senior aide Ali Shamkhani dismissed Trump’s threats, saying any “intervening hand” will be retaliated with “regret-inducing” response.
