A Danish lawmaker delivered an unusually blunt message to Donald Trump inside the European Parliament, pushing back sharply against the US president’s renewed claims over Greenland.
During a debate in the European Parliament, Danish MEP Anders Vistisen rejected Trump’s assertion that the United States should take control of Greenland for national security reasons.
“Let me put this in words you might understand: Mr President, fuck off,” Vistisen said, drawing attention across the chamber.
Trump has in recent days revived his long-held view that Greenland is strategically vital to US interests, arguing that Washington needs greater influence in the Arctic to counter Russia and China. He has also hinted that economic pressure could be applied against European allies that resist such moves.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and both Danish and Greenlandic leaders have repeatedly stated that the island is not for sale. European officials have framed Trump’s comments as a direct challenge to sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The controversy intensified after Trump posted an AI-edited image on his platform Truth Social showing an expanded US map that included Canada, Venezuela and Greenland. The image appeared to place Trump alongside European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Giorgia Meloni and Ursula von der Leyen.
In another AI-generated visual, Trump was shown with JD Vance and Marco Rubio planting an American flag on Greenland, labelled “US territory,” further fuelling anger across Europe.
