An art restoration at a church in Italy has made way for an unexpected political conversation after observers claimed that a newly restored painting of an angel looks very much like Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The uproar started when pictures of the painting, which was part of recently renovated church, started to appear on social media and in Italian media reports.
The restored artwork depicts an angel in profile, with facial features and hair that several spectators claimed resemble Meloni. The comparison soon started spreading online, starting a debate about on the likeness was coincidental or on purpose. Critics questioned whether a political figure had been subtly immortalised in a religious setting, while others dismissed the resemblance as exaggerated.
Meloni addressed the topic directly in a light hearted post, sharing a photo of the painting and replying to the comparisons. “No, I definitely don’t look like an angel,” she wrote, adding a laughing emoji. Rather than intensifying the debate, her remark seemed intended to diffuse the conversation.
The church and those involved in the restoration have rejected any suggestion of any conscious attempt to portray the prime minister. The restorer responsible for the work indicated in statements reported by Italian media that the features were based on the original artwork and creative interpretation, not on any contemporary political person. According to those supervising the renovation, the goal was to conserve and enhance the historical integrity of the painting and not to include new references.
Despite the denials, local authorities have reportedly launched an investigation on the restoration process to ensure that proper protocols were followed. In Italy, where art, religion and politics often interact, such debates are not unusual. Restoration projects have also sparked public debate previously over artistic choices, authenticity and symbolism.
Cultural commentators note that once photos are released online, any perceived likeness can quickly take on political meaning, regardless of whether it was the creator’s intention or not. In this case, the viral spread of side by side images intensified scrutiny and fuelled speculation.
While the episode appears unlikely to have serious political consequences, it highlights how even routine restoration work can become politicised in a highly connected media environment. For Meloni, the incident has so far remained a brief and somewhat humorous distraction rather than a substantive controversy.
