Hillary Clinton described her lengthy appearance before the House Oversight Committee as “long and very repetitive,” but said the session took a strange turn toward the end, with lawmakers raising topics like UFOs and the widely debunked Pizzagate conspiracy.
Speaking to reporters after the nearly seven-hour closed-door deposition in Chappaqua, New York, Clinton said she repeatedly denied any connection to Jeffrey Epstein.
“I don't know how many times I had to say I did not know Jeffrey Epstein. I never went to his island. I never went to his homes,” she stated.
Clinton emphasised that she had no knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and maintained she had never encountered him.
“I had no idea about their criminal activities. I do not recall ever encountering Mr. Epstein. I never flew on his plane or visited his island home or offices,” she said in her opening remarks to the panel.
However, according to Clinton, the questioning veered into unexpected territory.
“It then got, at the end, quite unusual because I started being asked about UFOs and a series of questions about Pizzagate, one of the most vile bogus conspiracy theories that was propagated on the internet,” she said.
She did not disclose which lawmaker raised those questions.
The deposition was briefly disrupted during the proceedings after Representative Lauren Boebert allegedly shared a photograph from the closed-door session with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson. Since photography is prohibited in such hearings, the interruption followed concerns over a potential breach of House rules. Boebert later defended her actions, saying Johnson “did nothing wrong,” though it remains unclear whether she will face any consequences.
Clinton also addressed scrutiny around her husband’s past association with Epstein. She expressed confidence that former President Bill Clinton was unaware of Epstein’s criminal behavior during the period they were acquainted. “I think the chronology of the connection that he had with Epstein ended years, several years, before anything about Epstein's criminal activities came to light,” she explained.
When asked directly whether she believed her husband knew of Epstein’s abuse of minors, Clinton responded firmly: “I am.”
She additionally accused Republicans of avoiding deeper examination of Donald Trump’s links to Epstein, suggesting a broader political dimension to the inquiry.
The hearing revisited the long-discredited Pizzagate conspiracy, which falsely claimed that senior Democratic figures were involved in a child trafficking ring linked to a Washington, DC pizzeria. The theory originated from misinterpretations of emails released by WikiLeaks and spread widely online despite having no factual basis.
Clinton’s testimony underscored her consistent denial of any association with Epstein while highlighting what she portrayed as the unusual and, at times, conspiratorial nature of some lines of questioning.
