Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Monday said he had “clearly explained" to US President Donald Trump that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee and not by the Norwegian government, after Trump linked his demand for US control of Greenland to not receiving the award.
“I have clearly explained, including to President Trump, what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian Government," Støre said.
The Norwegian leader confirmed that he received a message from Trump after he and Finnish President Alexander Stubb contacted the US President to oppose proposed tariff hikes against several European countries.
“I can confirm that this is a text message that I received yesterday afternoon from President Trump,” Stoere said. “It came in response to a short text message from me sent earlier the same day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland.”
Støre said the Nordic leaders urged de-escalation and proposed a phone call, but Trump’s response was later shared by the US President with other NATO leaders.
"Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace," Trump wrote, adding that he would now focus on "what is good and proper for the United States of America."
Trump then turned his remarks toward Greenland, the autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark that he has repeatedly said the US should acquire.
"Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China," he said.
"The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland," he added.
Støre rejected Trump’s position and reaffirmed Norway’s support for Denmark and NATO.
"Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark on this matter," he said. "We also support that NATO, in a responsible way, is taking steps to strengthen security and stability in the Arctic."
The exchange comes amid rising tensions between Washington and European allies over Greenland and trade, with Trump also threatening tariffs on multiple NATO countries if they oppose his plans for the territory.
