Green card holders are being stopped more often at US airports

Returning residents are discovering that a valid green card no longer guarantees a quick entry back into the United States.

Lawful permanent residents returning to the United States are increasingly finding that re-entry is no longer routine. Across major US airports, green card holders are being pulled aside for longer questioning, sent to secondary inspection, and in some cases warned that their residency status could be at risk. Immigration lawyers and advocacy groups say this reflects tighter enforcement rather than a new law, but the impact on travellers is real.

Under US immigration rules, a green card is meant for people who actually live in the United States. US Customs and Border Protection officers have wide discretion to assess whether a returning resident still meets that standard. In practice, this means officers are paying closer attention to how long someone has been outside the country and what ties they have maintained while away.

Extended absences are the most common trigger. Trips longer than six months raise red flags, and absences close to or exceeding a year often lead to detailed questioning. Officers may ask where the person lives, whether they are employed in the US, who their immediate family members are, and where they file taxes. The underlying question is simple: is the United States still your primary home, or have you quietly moved elsewhere?

Some travellers report being questioned about overseas jobs, foreign property, or repeated long stays outside the US. Others have been asked to explain gaps in US tax filings or why they no longer have a lease, utility bills, or active employment stateside. In a small number of cases, officers have asked individuals to sign forms relinquishing permanent residency, a step that immigration lawyers strongly advise against doing without legal counsel.

There has been no blanket ban on green card holders returning to the US, and most people are ultimately admitted. But the process can be stressful, time-consuming, and unpredictable. Even those who are allowed in may receive warnings that future travel could jeopardise their status if patterns do not change.

Preparation matters more than it used to. Carrying evidence of ongoing US ties can make a difference. This includes recent tax returns, employment letters, proof of a US address, health insurance, or school records for children. Those who expect to stay abroad for extended periods are advised to apply for a reentry permit before leaving, which signals an intention to keep U.S. residence despite a long absence.

The broader message from immigration officials is consistent. A green card is not just a travel document. It is a declaration of where your life is based. As airport checks grow more exacting, lawful permanent residents are being reminded that maintaining that status requires more than simply holding a valid card.
