Grammys 2026 turn political as stars wear ‘ICE OUT’ pins on the red carpet

A silent red carpet protest over immigration enforcement became one of the most talked-about moments of music’s biggest night.

This year’s Grammy Awards were not only about music. They also turned into a venue for protest and raising awareness, as a number of well-known artistes showed up on the red carpet displaying black-and-white “ICE OUT” pins in an obvious attempt to oppose US immigration enforcement.

Artistes who sported the pins included Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber and Kehlani, among others. The message was widely interpreted as a protest against recent acts by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, and by US federal border authorities that have come under intense public scrutiny.

The demonstration came after Alex Pretti was reportedly killed by a Border Patrol agent during a demonstration in the US state of Minnesota on January 24. The incident, where the 37-year-old American nurse was shot dead, has prompted anger among immigrant rights activists and revived requests for probes into the conduct of federal immigration officials. After the incident, thousands of protestors took to the streets to call for a thorough investigation into Pretti's shooting. They also demand that the Trump administration pull federal agents from cities like Minneapolis.

Civil liberties groups have also asked for more transparency and accountability from the government and federal authorities, stating that such incidents reflect long-standing concerns about use of force and an increased scope for human error within border enforcement agencies.

On the red carpet, Kehlani expressed freely her motivation for wearing the pin, saying that musicians had a duty to use their visibility to speak out. In statements that were later posted widely on the internet, the singer remarked, “We’re too powerful a group to all be in the room and not make a statement in our country.” She framed the remonstration as a shared act rather than an individual one.

During the live broadcast, neither the Recording Academy nor US federal authorities issued any immediate comments, but the incident soon became one of the most talked-about aspects of the ceremony. Clips of celebs posing with the pins and debating immigration policy trended across platforms within hours.

The Grammys have long provided a forum for political speech and expression, from anti-war themes to calls for racial justice. In recent years, more and more artists have used such platforms to discuss issues such as voting rights, gender equality and policing. This year’s “ICE OUT” pins fit squarely within that practice, showcasing how cultural events often interconnect with national discussions.

For advocates of the protest, the red carpet action focused the attention on immigration policy at a time when enforcement procedures remain deeply politicized. Critics, meanwhile, argued that entertainment platforms should remain separate from politics.

Is it obvious that the 2026 Grammys will be recognised for a strong political message in addition to the winners and performances.
