Tech billionaire Elon Musk said on Saturday that Belgium’s capital Brussels has fundamentally changed in character as the "great replacement" of demography has already happened in the city. Musk made the statement on X, the social media platform he owns, while responding to demographic statistics that revealed significant population shifts among the city's youth.
“73% of children in Brussels, the capital of Europe, are not European! The Great Replacement has already happened", Musk wrote on X, responding to a post by entrepreneur Mario Nawfal, who warned that the demographic transformation of Brussels will have “profound social consequences.”

Nawfal had shared concerns about what he described as far-reaching societal implications stemming from Brussels' changing demographics. "Official figures show that nearly 3 out of 4 children in Brussels are now of non-European origin, a transformation with profound social consequences," Nawfal wrote, arguing that the transformation resulted from intentional government decisions rather than organic change.
“This did not happen by accident, but through deliberate policy choices made by political elites who dismissed warnings as ‘myths,’” Nawfal further wrote, adding that “family reunification has become the primary engine of mass settlement, accelerating demographic change far beyond public consent.”
Nawfal pointed to family reunification programs as a major driver of population shifts, suggesting these policies moved forward despite public hesitation. Political leaders who raised concerns were accused of dismissing legitimate warnings, as per his post.
New statistics from Belgium's official statistics agency, quoted by Nawfal, reveal striking numbers about the capital's youngest residents. The data shows almost three-quarters of people under 18 have roots outside Europe. Only about 10.5% are recorded as having exclusively Belgian ancestry.

Musk's remarks carry particular weight given Brussels serves as the headquarters of the European Union. The city has evolved into one of the continent's most diverse metropolitan areas over several decades. Immigration has been fueled by the city's position as an administrative center for EU institutions and the economic prospects it offers.
Musk takes on EU, again
Musk did not provide detailed analysis of which specific policies he holds responsible for the demographic patterns. However, his comments fit within his wider pattern of criticizing how European governments operate and handle immigration matters. The chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX has become more vocal about political and social topics, frequently using X to voice his opinion.
The statement arrives during a period of friction between Musk and European regulatory bodies. EU officials had recently enforced digital content regulations against X, prompting harsh responses from Musk. Musk has often characterized the regulatory actions as excessive government interference.
Musk had lashed out at the European Union after the European Commission levied a €120 million penalty against X (formerly known as Twitter) for breaching several transparency and data access requirements under the Digital Services Act. "The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people," Musk had written. His comments quickly gained substantial traction online, sparking widespread conversation about immigration policy, national identity and government accountability throughout European nations.
