Fresh allegations of intimidation involving an independent opposition candidate and a Hindu administrative officer have heightened concerns about Bangladesh’s political environment ahead of the general elections.
Ataur Rahman, an independent candidate from the Manikganj-3 constituency and a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, claimed he was physically harassed inside the returning officer’s office after his nomination was rejected. Citing Prothom Alo, Rahman said he was pushed out of the chamber after objecting to the acceptance of a BNP-backed candidate’s nomination. In a written complaint to the district administration, he alleged that local BNP leaders threatened and humiliated him when he raised objections related to pending cases and utility dues involving the party nominee.

Videos allegedly showing the incident have circulated widely on social media, though News18 has not independently verified their authenticity. Rahman said the episode underscored the erosion of a free and fair electoral process and warned that inaction could embolden further violence. BNP leaders named in the complaint denied the allegations, saying Rahman was asked to leave for making derogatory remarks.
Separately, a Hindu district administrator was reportedly targeted by Islamist activists after cancelling the nomination of a Jamaat-backed candidate. Investigative journalist Sahidul Hasan Khokon said activists labelled the official, Annapurna Debnath, an “Indian agent” and an “ISKCON agent” following the rejection of Jamaat candidate Barrister Mahbubul Alam Salehi’s nomination in Kurigram-3. Khokon said the administrator was surrounded and verbally abused, with demands for her transfer, pointing to growing hostility towards Hindu officials carrying out constitutional duties.

According to Prothom Alo, Salehi’s nomination was cancelled due to unresolved dual citizenship issues, as he failed to provide proof of relinquishing his British citizenship within the stipulated timeframe.
In another development, prominent Hindu leader and lawyer Govind Chandra Pramanik was barred from contesting from Gopalganj-3 after the Election Commission cancelled his nomination. The Jatiya Hindu Mahajot general secretary alleged political pressure and said supporters who signed his papers were forced to withdraw. Speaking to India Today, Pramanik said he would challenge the decision before the Election Commission and the courts, calling it part of a broader pattern of marginalisation of Hindu political representation.
Bangladesh is set to hold general elections on February 12, with the Awami League, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami as the main contenders. The run-up has been marked by deep polarisation, claims of administrative bias, intimidation and a series of attacks on minorities.
