A Hindu man was seriously injured after being attacked by a mob and set on fire in Bangladesh, in yet another incident highlighting rising violence against minorities in the country.

The 50-year-old victim, identified as Khokon Das, suffered serious injuries after being attacked and set on fire in an incident that occurred on December 31 in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district.

He was returning home when a mob allegedly intercepted him, assaulted him with sharp weapons, beat him repeatedly, and then set him ablaze.

The attack comes amid a string of recent mob violence incidents targeting Hindus in Bangladesh. On December 24, a 29-year-old Hindu youth, Amrit Mondal, was allegedly lynched by a mob in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union.

Just days earlier, on December 18, another Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, aged 25, was brutally killed in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh following false blasphemy allegations levelled by a Muslim coworker at his factory. The mob reportedly beat him to death, hung his body from a tree and then set it on fire.

The latest incident also comes a day after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was in Dhaka to attend the funeral of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, where he handed over a letter of condolences from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman.

Bangladesh expressed its optimism for a fresh chapter in its relations with India following Jaishankar's visit to Dhaka. The commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Riaz Hamidullah, shared on X that Bangladesh and India are “looking forward to script a new chapter in ties, in shared interests driven by pragmatism and mutual interdependence.”

Since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina's government in August last year, the relations between India and Bangladesh have come under strain after the interim government headed by Yunus came to power. India has been expressing concerns over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in that country.
