The historic city of Jaipur has earned global recognition after being named among the world’s 50 most beautiful cities by the renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.
The honour highlights the timeless charm of Rajasthan’s capital — a city where grand palaces, pink-hued streets and centuries-old traditions come together to create one of India’s most visually striking destinations.
Often called the Pink City, Jaipur has long fascinated travellers with its royal heritage, vibrant bazaars and distinctive architecture.

Why Jaipur is called the Pink City
One of Jaipur’s most iconic features is the warm orangey-pink colour that defines much of its historic old town.
This distinctive shade dates back to 1876, when the city’s ruler Sawai Ram Singh II ordered buildings across the city to be painted pink to welcome Prince Albert and Queen Victoria during their royal visit to India.
The colour pink was associated with hospitality, making it a symbolic gesture of welcome.
The tradition endured long after the royal visit ended. Even today, many buildings within Jaipur’s walled city remain painted in shades of pink, giving the city its instantly recognisable identity.

A city where history meets architecture
Jaipur’s inclusion in the global list celebrates not only its colour but also its extraordinary architectural heritage.
The city is home to some of India’s most famous landmarks, including the magnificent Hawa Mahal, the hilltop Amber Fort, and the regal City Palace.
Its historic core is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, recognised for its planned urban design, grand gateways, bustling markets and traditional Rajasthani architecture.
Strolling through Jaipur’s old city reveals intricately carved façades, colourful doorways, lively street markets and historic temples — all framed by the signature pink palette.

More than just beautiful streets
According to Condé Nast Traveler, the Top 50 most beautiful cities in the world list is not simply a ranking based on aesthetics.
Instead, it celebrates destinations that offer distinctive cultural experiences, whether through historic neighbourhoods, natural landscapes, architectural beauty or vibrant urban life.
In Jaipur’s case, it is the seamless blend of royal history, art, culture and architecture that continues to captivate travellers from around the globe.
From exploring centuries-old forts and palaces to browsing handicrafts in bustling bazaars and tasting traditional Rajasthani cuisine, Jaipur offers an experience that goes far beyond its photogenic streets.
