For Indian professionals dreaming of living in Europe without quitting their remote jobs, Spain has opened an attractive new door. The country is offering a Digital Nomad Visa that allows eligible foreign nationals, including Indians, to live and work legally in Spain for up to five years—provided they meet a strict income and experience threshold.

The visa is part of Spain’s broader push to attract highly skilled global talent and remote workers who can contribute to the economy without taking up local jobs. While the opportunity is significant, it is clearly designed for high-earning professionals, not casual remote workers.

What Spain’s digital nomad visa offers

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa allows individuals who work remotely for companies or clients outside Spain to reside in the country on a long-term basis. This means Indian professionals can continue working for their Indian employer, overseas clients, or their own remote business while living anywhere in Spain.

Unlike short-term tourist visas that many remote workers rely on, this is a residency permit, offering legal clarity, stability, and the ability to stay for several years. The visa can initially be issued for one year and extended, with a total validity of up to five years, subject to compliance with visa conditions.

Who can apply from India?

This visa is targeted at high-income, skilled professionals. For Indian citizens, the eligibility bar is set high:

  • Single applicants must earn more than Rs 30 lakh annually.
  • Couples applying together must show a combined annual income of over Rs 40 lakh.
  • In addition to income requirements, applicants must have a minimum of three years of professional work experience.
  • Proof that they have been working remotely for at least three months prior to application.

The nature of work is also clearly defined. Applicants must work for companies or clients based outside Spain. Taking up local employment within Spain is not permitted under this visa. The scheme is well-suited for IT professionals, consultants, freelancers, startup founders, entrepreneurs, and digital service providers whose work can be performed entirely online.

Documents required for the visa

Applicants are required to submit a comprehensive set of documents, including:

  • Proof of income through employment letters or client contracts.
  • Bank statements for the last three months showing stable earnings.
  • Proof of residence within the Spanish consular jurisdiction.
  • Police clearance certificate issued by Indian authorities.
  • International health insurance valid in Spain.
  • Identity documents such as passport copies.
  • Proof of academic qualifications or professional credentials, such as a degree or recognised certification.

All documents must be submitted through the Spanish consulate in India, and some may require translation or apostille, depending on consular requirements.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

The basic visa application fee is approximately Rs 8,000. However, once additional costs such as documentation, translations, insurance, and processing charges are factored in, the total expense can rise to around Rs 1 lakh.

Visa applications are typically processed within 30 days, provided the documentation is complete and correctly submitted. Processing time can vary depending on individual cases and the quality of the application.

Can family members join?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa is that applicants can bring their spouse and children along as dependents. Family members must submit documents clearly establishing their relationship with the primary applicant. Dependent visas are aligned with the main applicant’s residency period.

Why this visa matters for Indian professionals

For years, Indian remote workers have looked to destinations like Bali, Thailand, or Vietnam for work-from-anywhere lifestyles due to lower costs and flexible stays. Spain’s digital nomad visa changes the equation by offering a European base, long-term legal residency, and access to the Schengen zone, allowing visa-free travel across much of Europe.

However, the high income requirement means this opportunity is best suited for senior professionals, founders, and globally paid freelancers rather than entry-level remote workers.

Europe beckons, but only for high earners

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa opens a new chapter for well-paid Indian professionals seeking a European lifestyle without changing jobs. The five-year residency option, family inclusion, and Schengen access make it one of the most attractive digital nomad visas globally. But with income thresholds starting at Rs 30 lakh a year, it remains a premium option—one that rewards experience, stability, and strong earning power.

For those who qualify, Spain is no longer just a holiday destination—it could be home.
