Slovenia launches digital nomad visa: Check eligibility, documents and how to apply

Slovenia launches its Digital Nomad Visa for non-EU/EEA citizens. Check eligibility, required documents, application process, and why Slovenia is the perfect base for remote work in Europe.

Live and work in Slovenia for up to 12 months with the new Digital Nomad Visa – explore alpine towns, historic cities, and Europe’s stunning landscapes while staying connected.

Europe’s digital nomad map is expanding, and Slovenia is the latest country to roll out the welcome mat for remote workers. Following pioneers like Estonia, the alpine EU nation has officially announced its Digital Nomad Visa, launching on November 21, 2025, positioning itself as a long-stay base for global professionals who want to live in Europe beyond the typical tourist circuit.

Tucked between Italy, Austria and Croatia, Slovenia blends alpine scenery, medieval towns, vineyard-dotted countryside and a calm, high-quality lifestyle. For Indian remote workers dreaming of Europe without sky-high living costs, this visa could be a game-changer.

What is Slovenia’s digital nomad visa?

Slovenia’s Digital Nomad Visa allows non-EU and non-EEA citizens to live in the country for up to 12 months, while working remotely for employers or clients based outside Slovenia. The permit is non-renewable, but comes with a significant perk—Slovenia is part of the Schengen Area, meaning visa holders can travel across 29 European countries for up to 90 days without additional visas.

Family members can also accompany the primary applicant, provided they do not take up local employment.

Who is eligible to apply for Slovenia's digital nomad visa?

While the final official guidelines are awaited, current eligibility requirements include:

  • Applicants must be 18 years or older.
  • A valid non-EU/EEA passport (Indian passport holders are eligible).
  • Must work remotely as an employee, freelancer or business owner for companies or clients outside Slovenia.
  • Minimum monthly income of €3,200 (approx. Rs 3,41,400 lakh), which is twice Slovenia’s average net salary.
  • A clean criminal record.
  • Valid international health insurance covering the entire stay.

Applicants are strictly prohibited from engaging in any local employment or business activity within Slovenia.

Documents required for the Slovenia digital nomad visa

Applicants should be prepared with the following documents (originals and copies):

  • Passport copy.
  • Proof of remote employment or freelance contracts.
  • Recent bank statements (typically 3–12 months).
  • Certified criminal background check.
  • Proof of international health insurance valid in Slovenia.
  • Accommodation address in Slovenia.
  • Completed visa application form.

Additional documentation may be required once official application guidelines are released.

When and where can Indians apply for a Slovenia digital nomad visa?

The detailed application process—online or via Slovenian consulates—is yet to be officially announced. Applications are expected to open from November 21, 2025. Indian applicants are advised to monitor updates on the official Slovenian government and embassy websites.

Why choose Slovenia as a digital nomad base?

Slovenia offers a rare balance of affordability, safety and lifestyle. Its capital Ljubljana is consistently ranked among Europe’s most liveable small cities, with rents 70–75% lower than New York and significantly cheaper than major Western European capitals.

The country boasts:

  • High-speed internet and reliable infrastructure.
  • Growing co-working hubs in Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje and Koper.
  • Easy access to nature—from Lake Bled and the Julian Alps to Triglav National Park and the Adriatic coast.
  • A reputation as one of Europe’s cleanest and safest countries.

Add café-lined riversides, baroque architecture, short commutes and weekend trips across Europe, and Slovenia becomes an appealing long-term base for remote professionals.

The bottom line

With its upcoming Digital Nomad Visa, Slovenia is opening its doors to Indian remote workers seeking a European lifestyle without the usual financial and visa hurdles. For those who want to work from alpine lakes, historic towns and café-filled capitals—while staying Schengen-connected—Slovenia may soon be one of Europe’s most attractive digital nomad destinations.
