The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, has issued a fresh advisory for Indian citizens in view of the rapidly developing situation in Nepal. The ministry has urged Indian nationals to defer travel to Nepal until the situation stabilises and advised those already in the country to remain cautious.

The advisory noted: "In view of the developing situation in Nepal, Indian citizens are advised to defer travel there until the situation has stabilised. Indian citizens presently in Nepal are advised to shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets and exercise all due caution. They are also advised to follow local safety advisories from Nepal authorities as well as the Embassy of India in Kathmandu. "

MEA Expresses Condolences

In a separate statement, the ministry also urged Indian nationals in Nepal to follow the guidelines laid down by Nepali authorities amid escalating Gen Z-led protests. Expressing sympathy, it said: "We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with families of deceased. We also wish speedy recovery for those who were injured."

Social Media Ban Sparks Protests

The ongoing unrest was triggered after the Nepal government announced a ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had argued that the ban was aimed at regulating platforms that had not formally registered with the government.

However, the move ignited widespread anger. Thousands of Gen Z protesters took to the streets, leading to violent clashes and prompting authorities to impose curfews in Kathmandu and several other cities.

The MEA noted these developments, stating: "We have also taken note that authorities have imposed curfew in Kathmandu and several other cities of Nepal. Indian nationals in Nepal are advised to exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities."

India Calls for Calm and Dialogue

Reiterating its role as a long-standing partner, India appealed for restraint and peaceful resolution. The MEA added: "As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will excercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue."

Government Withdraws Ban but Protests Continue

Facing mounting pressure from youth, Nepal’s government eventually reversed its decision and directed agencies to restore access to all blocked platforms. Despite the rollback, protests have continued in some regions, reflecting ongoing frustrations among the country’s younger population.
