On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2026 on February 2, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that efforts are underway to secure a Ramsar site tag for Neeli Jheel, located within the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. The move is part of Delhi’s broader plan to restore and conserve the city’s precious water bodies and biodiversity.
Delhi marked World Wetlands Day with programmes at both the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary and the Yamuna Biodiversity Park, organised by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). During the event at Asola Bhatti, Sirsa also announced an ambitious target of planting 3.5 million saplings in the Delhi Ridge area over the next four years, reflecting the city’s commitment to ecological restoration.
Describing wetlands as vital for both life and culture, Sirsa said, "Conservation of water bodies is not only an environmental responsibility but is also intrinsically linked to the protection of our traditions and the security of future generations." He highlighted that Delhi once had over 1,000 water bodies, many of which were lost to encroachment and neglect. "The Delhi government has resolved to revive all water bodies. It has set a target to restore the maximum possible number of water bodies by the end of 2027," he added.
Sirsa further revealed that efforts are underway in coordination with the Central government to notify Neeli Jheel as a Ramsar site.
What is a Ramsar site?
A Ramsar site is a wetland designated under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty signed in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The convention aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide, recognising their role in supporting biodiversity, regulating water cycles, and sustaining human life. Inclusion on the Ramsar list helps maintain wetlands’ ecosystem components, processes, and benefits, ensuring international recognition and protection.
Neeli Jheel: A hidden gem in Delhi
Also known locally as Bharadwaj Lake, Neeli Jheel is famed for its crystal-clear waters, tranquil environment, and abundant birdlife. Located within the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, the lake is a popular spot for nature walks, birdwatching, and quiet reflection, offering a peaceful escape from Delhi’s urban hustle. Its pristine surroundings and relatively untouched environment make it an ideal candidate for Ramsar recognition, showcasing Delhi’s ecological treasures.
Delhi’s wider environmental initiatives
Referring to the Delhi Ridge, Sirsa said 10,000 acres of land have now been notified as Ridge Forest, and the 3.5 million saplings initiative will further strengthen the city’s green cover. On pollution control, he added, "Technological innovations are being promoted through which pollutants such as PM2.5 and PM10 can be captured around water bodies."
On landfill remediation, Sirsa said that out of Delhi’s 202 acres of landfill sites, 45 acres have been fully reclaimed. "Through bio-mining, waste is being utilised for fuel and inert material, and Delhi will be completely freed from garbage mountains by 2027," he noted.
Union Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh and senior officials were present at the programme, highlighting the government’s commitment to urban environmental governance.
At the DDA event at the Yamuna Biodiversity Park, Vice Chairman N. Saravana Kumar underscored the importance of land management and urban planning in protecting cities from natural disasters such as floods. He also noted that nearly 15 per cent of Delhi comprises DDA parks accessible to the public, emphasising their value for recreation and conservation.
Significance of Ramsar recognition for Delhi
If notified, Neeli Jheel will become Delhi’s first Ramsar site, joining a global network of wetlands recognised for their ecological and cultural importance. Ramsar designation not only brings international attention but also ensures stronger conservation efforts, critical for Delhi’s biodiversity and climate resilience.
For nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and eco-tourists, Neeli Jheel represents a rare, serene destination in the heart of Delhi, combining natural beauty, ecological significance, and cultural heritage.
