Dense fog disrupts flight operations at Delhi airport on December 29, leading to multiple IndiGo flight cancellations and delays across major Indian cities. Check details.

December 29, 2025 / 12:08 IST
Dense fog at Delhi’s IGI Airport disrupted flight operations on December 29, triggering multiple IndiGo cancellations and delays across India.

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport were significantly disrupted on Monday morning, December 29, as dense fog blanketed the national capital, reducing visibility to as low as 50 metres. The poor weather conditions led to widespread flight delays and cancellations, prompting airlines including IndiGo and Air India to issue passenger advisories.

Delhi airport is currently operating under Category-III conditions, which permit aircraft landings in very low visibility. However, despite these advanced systems, the fog has slowed arrivals and departures, with disruptions expected to continue until at least the noon hours.

IndiGo Issues Travel Advisory

India’s largest domestic airline, IndiGo, said it is closely monitoring the situation and making necessary operational adjustments. In its advisory, the airline stated that foggy conditions persist across Delhi and several airports in northern India, and delays may continue as visibility is yet to improve fully. IndiGo assured passengers that flight movements are being carefully sequenced to ensure safety and smooth operations, with airport teams deployed at key touchpoints to assist travellers.

Passengers have been advised to check real-time flight status before leaving for the airport and allow extra time for surface travel, as dense fog has also affected road visibility across the city.

Weather Conditions in Delhi

The national capital woke up to chilly conditions and thick fog, with temperatures hovering around 22.5 degrees Celsius. Low visibility forced many motorists to keep headlights on, adding to commuter discomfort. The same conditions severely impacted air traffic, disrupting passenger schedules at IGI Airport.

Nationwide Ripple Effect on Flight Operations

The weather-related disruptions in Delhi triggered a broader impact on India’s aviation network. Multiple domestic flights were cancelled across key airports, underlining how closely interconnected airline operations are nationwide. Cancellations were recorded at Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Jaipur, Guwahati, Dehradun, Patna, Amritsar, and Chandigarh, among others.

Several high-frequency routes and metro-to-regional connections were affected, including flights between Delhi and destinations such as Jammu, Dehradun, Indore, Udaipur, Bhopal, Patna, Ranchi, Nagpur, and Mumbai. Some cancellations were also attributed to forecasted bad weather at destination airports like Jammu, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Haldwani, and Pantnagar, while a few services were cancelled for operational reasons.

Impact on Passengers

The large number of cancellations and delays led to missed connections, longer waiting times, and limited rebooking options for travellers. With multiple hubs affected simultaneously, airlines continue to recalibrate schedules to maintain network stability.

Passengers travelling on domestic routes today are strongly advised to monitor airline alerts, remain flexible with travel plans, and prepare for possible last-minute changes as fog conditions continue to affect flight operations across northern India.

IndiGo Cancels Multiple Flights Due to Bad Weather

As dense fog and adverse weather conditions continued to disrupt operations across multiple airports, IndiGo cancelled several domestic flights on December 29. The cancellations affected metro-to-metro and metro-to-regional routes, primarily due to bad weather at departure or destination airports, along with a few operational reasons.
