In a major boost to rail connectivity in the Northeast, India’s first direct passenger train service between Silchar in Assam and Sairang in Mizoram was inaugurated on February 9, 2026. The new rail link, virtually flagged off by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is being seen as a game-changer for travel, trade, and economic integration between the two states.

The service directly connects Silchar in Assam’s Barak Valley with Sairang, located close to Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, marking a historic milestone in the region’s transport network.

A milestone for Mizoram and the Northeast

In Mizoram, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma attended a special commemorative programme at Sairang Railway Station, joined by Rural Development Minister Lalnilawma, Revenue Minister B. Lalchhanzova, and Adviser to the CM and MLA TBC Lalvenchhunga.

Addressing the gathering, Lalduhoma described the Sairang–Silchar rail link as a turning point in the state’s development journey. He said the project would strengthen Mizoram’s ties with neighbouring Assam, improve access to wider markets, and support the state’s agricultural economy.

The Chief Minister highlighted the role of the new railway line in boosting the flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ (handholding) scheme and facilitating smoother movement of produce such as ginger to larger markets.

He stressed that the service is about more than just passenger convenience. “Silchar is not merely a neighbouring city but a vital economic gateway for Mizoram. The new train service would contribute positively to Mizoram's economic growth,” Lalduhoma said.

Act East Policy driving connectivity

The Chief Minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Act East Policy for accelerating infrastructure development across Mizoram and the wider Northeast.

“The Northeast region, once considered remote, is now seeing the benefits of enhanced connectivity,” he said, adding that improved rail and road links are helping integrate the region more closely with the national economy.

Lalduhoma also thanked the Union Railway Minister for responding to the state’s long-standing request to operationalise the Sairang–Silchar route.

Growing importance of Sairang railway station

Highlighting the rapid development of Sairang railway station since its opening five months ago, the Chief Minister praised the Ministry of Railways and the NF Railway Lumding division for their infrastructure push.

He also proposed three additional initiatives to further strengthen connectivity and economic activity:

  • Construction of a warehouse facility at Sairang to support local entrepreneurs.
  • Completion of the proposed rail line to Thenzawl Peace City in Mamit district.
  • Extension of the New Delhi–Silchar Rajdhani Express up to Sairang.

Train schedule and operational details

The new passenger train began its maiden journey from Sairang Railway Station at 12 pm and will operate five days a week. It is the first-ever direct rail connection between the Barak Valley and Aizawl, significantly reducing travel complexity for passengers.

Train timings and days of operation:

  • From Silchar: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
  • From Sairang: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
  • Departure from Silchar: 1 pm.
  • Arrival at Sairang: 6:30 pm.
  • Departure from Sairang: 7 am.
  • Arrival at Silchar: Around 12:30 pm.

Officials say the service is expected to boost tourism, improve freight movement, and strengthen people-to-people ties between Assam and Mizoram.

Additional railway upgrades in the Northeast

Alongside the launch of the Silchar–Sairang service, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also inaugurated the Blended Hospitality Service at Guwahati Railway Station. The new facility includes sleeping pods for hire, a modern air-conditioned lounge, and a multi-cuisine restaurant, aimed at improving passenger experience during transit.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Lalduhoma reiterated that infrastructure development in Mizoram and the Northeast has gained fresh momentum under the Act East Policy, with rail connectivity playing a central role.

With the launch of the first direct passenger train between Assam and Mizoram, the region takes a significant step towards faster travel, stronger trade links, and deeper economic integration—bringing the Northeast closer to the rest of the country than ever before.
