  • Study of 1.3M reviews reveals Europe's most authentic travel spots.

From overpriced restaurants built for tourists to attractions that feel staged rather than genuine, travellers often return home wondering if they truly experienced the soul of the cities they visited. It’s a frustration many of us know well. While travel insurance can protect your journey, modern travellers increasingly seek experiences that feel authentic—rooted in local life, culture, and everyday traditions rather than mass tourism.

What Makes a City Authentic?

This growing desire for real, meaningful connections has inspired the concept of authentic travel. It’s no longer about ticking off landmarks, but about eating where locals eat, wandering neighbourhood streets that feel lived-in, and discovering traditions that exist beyond curated visitor experiences. Authentic travel is about immersion, connection, and the everyday life of a city.

How the Ranking Was Determined

To help travellers identify destinations that still deliver this sense of reality, InsureandGo conducted a global survey of the world’s most authentic cities. Analysing over 1.3 million online travel reviews across 140+ cities, the team created an Authenticity Index. This ranking measures how often visitors describe restaurants, shops, museums, cultural venues, and attractions as authentic, traditional, or local.

The study also accounted for negative mentions, such as places being labelled “tourist traps” or overly commercial. These insights were combined to generate an Authenticity Score out of 100, revealing which cities consistently deliver immersive, real-world experiences according to travellers themselves.

Europe’s Top Authentic Cities

While the global survey identified the world’s most authentic cities, five European destinations stood out for offering visitors truly genuine, local experiences. These are cities where you can step into everyday life, experience culture firsthand, and feel like more than just a visitor.

From Mediterranean port cities to historic capitals shaped by resilience and tradition, these destinations offer travellers a true sense of place, far beyond the usual tourist trails.

Marseille, France Marseille, France

1. Marseille, France

Authenticity Score: 51.5

Topping the list as Europe’s most authentic city, Marseille offers a raw, unfiltered view of French life that feels refreshingly real. As one of Europe’s oldest cities and France’s most multicultural urban centres, Marseille’s identity is shaped by its working port, immigrant communities and deeply rooted neighbourhood culture.

Unlike more polished French destinations, Marseille’s districts feel lived-in rather than curated. Local markets, family-run restaurants and gritty harbour streets give visitors an honest insight into everyday life, making it easy to experience the city beyond postcard clichés.

Warsaw, Poland Warsaw, Poland

2. Warsaw, Poland

Authenticity Score: 50.6

Ranking second, Warsaw’s authenticity lies in its powerful blend of modernity and memory. Rebuilt almost entirely after World War II, the city has carefully preserved its traditions while embracing contemporary culture.

Travellers consistently praise Warsaw’s reconstructed Old Town, where narrow cobbled streets, colourful façades and historic squares feel both meaningful and lived-in. The city’s strong local identity, affordable dining and thriving cultural scene help visitors feel less like tourists and more like temporary residents.

Tbilisi, Georgia Tbilisi, Georgia

3. Tbilisi, Georgia

Authenticity Score: 44.2

Taking third place is Tbilisi, Georgia’s atmospheric capital that sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Known for its distinctive architecture, sulphur baths and deeply ingrained hospitality, Tbilisi offers experiences that still feel untouched by mass tourism.

Visitors highlight the city’s centuries-old winemaking traditions, neighbourhood bakeries serving fresh khachapuri, and cosy wine bars tucked into historic streets. These everyday pleasures combine to create an experience that feels unmistakably Georgian and genuinely local.

Porto, Portugal Porto, Portugal

4. Porto, Portugal

Authenticity Score: 43.6

Porto has long been celebrated for its soul, and its ranking confirms that reputation. The city’s riverside neighbourhoods, traditional port wine lodges and azulejo-tiled buildings offer visitors a true glimpse into northern Portuguese life.

Despite its growing popularity, Porto still feels grounded in tradition. Locals and visitors share the same cafés, markets and viewpoints, helping travellers feel immersed rather than funnelled into tourist-only spaces.

Lyon, France Lyon, France

5. Lyon, France

Authenticity Score: 41.2

Rounding out the top five is Lyon, a city renowned for its culinary heritage and historic districts. Famous for its traditional bouchons, Lyon consistently delivers authentic food experiences rooted in local culture rather than tourism trends.

Notably, Lyon has one of the lowest tourist-trap rates in the study—just 0.3%—making it easy for visitors to explore without feeling overcharged or overwhelmed. From hidden traboules (passageways) to lively neighbourhood markets, Lyon offers authenticity without trying too hard.

Why authentic travel matters more than ever

For many travellers, the word “touristy” has become shorthand for disappointment. Nobody wants to feel like they’ve paid more for less—or experienced a sanitised version of reality. These rankings show that while overtourism is a growing challenge, authentic experiences are still very much alive across Europe.

Whether you’re seeking local cuisine, traditional neighbourhoods or a deeper cultural connection, these five cities prove that it’s still possible to travel Europe and feel like you truly belong—even if only for a few days.

If your next trip is about connection rather than crowds, these destinations are the perfect place to start.
