The State Names Authority, headed by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has approved the renaming of two metro stations and modification of seven others in the national capital, according to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office. The Authority reviewed proposals concerning 21 stations, retaining 12 names as originally proposed.
The Chief Minister said the metro stations are not merely points of transit, but also reflect the identity and cultural significance of the areas they serve. Therefore, each name was finalised only after careful and considered deliberation.
According to the statement, the decision followed detailed deliberations that took into account the historical, social and cultural relevance of neighbourhoods, along with representations and recommendations received from local public representatives and residents.
The Chief Minister added that similar proposals will continue to be considered in the future if they are found reasonable and aligned with public interest.
Stations that have been renamed
Two stations have been officially renamed:
The renaming aligns the station identities more closely with the traditional and widely recognised localities they serve.
Stations with modified names
Seven stations have undergone partial modifications to incorporate additional locality identifiers:
Uttari Pitampura–Prashant Vihar (earlier: Prashant Vihar)
Jagatpur–Wazirabad (earlier: Jagatpur)
Nanak Pyau–Derawal Nagar (earlier: Derawal Nagar)
Khanpur–Vayusainabad (earlier: Khanpur)
Nanaksar–Sonia Vihar (earlier: Sonia Vihar)
Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (earlier: Mayur Vihar Pocket 1)
Mangolpur Kalan–West Enclave (earlier: West Enclave)
The additions are aimed at improving geographical clarity and ensuring that station names better reflect prominent landmarks or historically recognised areas nearby.
Stations where names were retained
Twelve station names, as originally proposed in the detailed project reports, have been retained. These include:
Majlis Park
Bhalaswa
Haiderpur Badli Mor
Deepali Chowk
Yamuna Vihar
Bhajanpura
Khajuri Khas
Soorghat
Jharoda Majra
Burari
Pushpanjali
Maujpur-Babarpur
Officials said these names were found to already reflect local identity and did not require modification.
What this means for commuters
For daily passengers, especially those relying on route maps, announcements, and digital navigation tools, the updated station names may require a brief adjustment period. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is expected to update signage, route maps, and onboard announcements accordingly.
Authorities emphasised that the move is not merely administrative but symbolic — aimed at strengthening the link between public infrastructure and community identity. By aligning station names with local history and sentiment, the government says it hopes to enhance a sense of belonging among residents.
Commuters are advised to check updated route maps and official notifications before planning their journeys in the coming days.
