Can an entire global city be labelled a “tourist trap”? The latest 2026 travel data suggests it can.

According to the newly released Authenticity Index by UK-based insurer InsureandGo, Chicago has been ranked the world’s most tourist-trap city for 2026. The American metropolis received an Authenticity Score of just 2.0 out of 100 — the lowest among more than 140 cities analysed globally.

How the ranking was determined

The data-driven study examined over 1.3 million online travel reviews, evaluating how frequently visitors described restaurants, attractions, museums, shops and cultural venues as “authentic” or “traditional”. These mentions were then weighed against negative descriptors such as “tourist trap”, “scam”, “overpriced” and “commercialised”.

Each destination was assigned an Authenticity Score out of 100, offering insight into how genuine or staged travellers perceived their experiences to be.

While several cities scored high for preserving local character and everyday culture, others were flagged for heavy commercialisation, crowd congestion and inflated pricing in core tourist districts.

Chicago placed at the very bottom of the global list.

Why Chicago scored so low

Globally known for its striking skyline, deep-dish pizza and major attractions such as Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago, the city remains one of the United States’ most visited urban destinations.

However, according to review trends analysed in the index, many visitors felt that central tourist areas appeared highly commercialised, crowded and expensive. Long queues, premium pricing and heavily packaged experiences were among the recurring themes in feedback.

The report suggests that while Chicago’s landmarks are globally recognised and culturally significant, travellers often struggle to connect with authentic neighbourhood life when staying within major sightseeing corridors.

What does “tourist trap” really mean?

It’s important to note that the term “tourist trap” doesn’t imply a lack of value or significance. In many cases, popular attractions are crowded because they are genuinely world-class.

But the index highlights a growing shift in traveller expectations. Increasingly, tourists are looking beyond landmark-heavy city centres and seeking:

  • Local neighbourhood experiences
  • Community-driven dining spots
  • Affordable cultural interactions
  • Less commercialised districts
  • Authentic street life

Cities that rely heavily on packaged tourism experiences may score lower when reviews emphasise crowding and inflated pricing.

A broader travel trend in 2026

The Authenticity Index reflects a wider global trend: experiential travel is replacing traditional sightseeing as a priority.

Younger travellers in particular are choosing destinations that feel “lived-in” rather than curated. Social media exposure has also raised awareness of overtourism, prompting visitors to search for places that offer deeper cultural immersion.

Chicago’s low score does not diminish its architectural significance or cultural contributions. Instead, it signals that many visitors perceive a gap between the city’s iconic attractions and its grassroots identity — at least within highly trafficked areas.

Should travellers avoid Chicago?

Not necessarily.

Like most major global cities, Chicago is multifaceted. While central tourist zones may feel commercial, neighbourhoods beyond downtown — such as Wicker Park, Logan Square and Pilsen — offer independent eateries, street art, music venues and community culture that rarely feature in mainstream travel brochures.

The report’s findings serve more as a reflection of visitor sentiment than a definitive travel verdict.

The bigger picture

The 2026 rankings underline a critical shift in global tourism: authenticity has become a measurable expectation.

Analysing over a million real traveller reviews provides insight into how destinations are perceived — not just promoted. And as the competition for global tourism dollars intensifies, cities may increasingly need to balance visitor infrastructure with preserving genuine local character.

For travellers, the takeaway is simple: even in cities labelled as “tourist traps”, the real experience often lies just a few streets away from the main attractions.
