Indian travellers considering a Caucasus trip in 2026 may find it significantly easier to add Armenia to their itinerary. The West Asian nation has announced a temporary visa exemption, allowing eligible Indian passport holders to enter without obtaining a visa and stay for up to 180 days.
The visa-free window will remain in effect from January 1 to July 1, 2026, and applies to nationals of 113 countries, including India. The move is part of Armenia’s broader effort to boost tourism, attract business visitors and strengthen international connectivity. For Indian residents based in the US, Europe and select Gulf countries, the policy removes embassy appointments and visa processing timelines, making short-notice travel more convenient in early 2026.
Who is eligible?
Indian passport holders can travel visa-free under this policy if they hold a valid residence permit issued by:
The United States
Any European Union member state
A Schengen Area country
The United Arab Emirates
Bahrain
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Kuwait
Oman
The residence permit must remain valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Armenia.
What documents are required?
Travellers must present their residence permit at the border, either as a physical residence card or as a sticker affixed to the passport.
Authorities have clarified that the permit should display key details in Latin script, including the document title, traveller’s full name, nationality, date of birth and validity period in Gregorian calendar format (for example, 18 June 2027). Border officials retain the right to verify documentation before granting entry.
Eligible travellers may stay in Armenia for up to 180 days within a 12-month period under this exemption.
Wider coverage beyond India
The temporary waiver also applies to nationals from several countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America, including South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philippines. The full list is available on Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
Why this matters for Indian travellers
For Indian residents living in the US, Europe or GCC countries, the exemption removes visa fees and embassy visits, making last-minute travel easier. Tour operators are already promoting short Caucasus itineraries that combine Armenia with neighbouring Georgia.
Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, serves as the country’s political and financial centre. The landlocked nation is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east and Iran to the south.
What travellers can expect
Armenia is known for its ancient monasteries, mountain landscapes and UNESCO-listed heritage sites. From café culture in Yerevan to hiking trails across the Caucasus highlands, the country offers a blend of history, cuisine and outdoor experiences.
How this impacts your 2026 travel plans
If you are an Indian passport holder with valid residency in the US, EU, Schengen region or select GCC nations, Armenia’s temporary 180-day visa-free policy could simplify travel plans in early 2026. Ensure your residence permit meets the six-month validity requirement before booking.
