The temple town of Tirupati is preparing for a major boost to its tourism profile with the launch of seaplane rides at Kalyani Dam. The Andhra Pradesh government is moving ahead with plans to establish a water aerodrome at the reservoir, located around 15 kilometres from the city. Trial runs are expected to begin next year, with full operations targeted by March 2026. The project is set to provide faster access to the pilgrim city while adding a unique adventure element to the travel experience.
Tourism and Connectivity Boost
The initiative is being developed by the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Limited (APADCL) under the Centre’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme. The project will improve last-mile air connectivity and attract more visitors, further strengthening Tirupati’s position as one of the country’s most visited pilgrimage and tourism hubs.
Seaplane services at Kalyani Dam will allow visitors to enjoy aerial views of the Tirumala Hills, Chandragiri Fort and the scenic surroundings, enhancing the overall appeal of the city. The aerodrome will also serve as a key link between spiritual tourism and adventure travel, creating a more diverse tourism circuit for the region.
Project Timelines
Feedback Highways Pvt. Ltd has been tasked with preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Tirupati aerodrome. The report is expected to be completed by October. Once technical and financial approvals are secured, construction will begin, paving the way for early trial runs in 2025.
The Kalyani Dam site has been deemed ideal for seaplane operations due to its calm reservoir conditions, wide water body, and natural setting at the foothills of Tirumala. Its proximity to the Tirupati International Airport at Renigunta will ensure the required technical support for smooth operations.
First Phase Rollout
Tirupati is among the three locations selected for the first phase of Andhra Pradesh’s seaplane initiative, along with Amaravati and Gandikota. RITES is preparing DPRs for Amaravati and Gandikota, while Feedback Highways is focusing on Tirupati. Other destinations identified for future expansion include Araku, Lambasingi, Konaseema, Rushikonda and Srisailam.
The state government aims to develop temple tourism circuits by linking major pilgrimage centres with affordable seaplane services. Earlier, a successful test flight between Vijayawada and Srisailam demonstrated the potential of this model, encouraging faster rollout of similar projects.
Economic and Cultural Impact
The seaplane project is expected to significantly increase tourist arrivals in Tirupati, benefiting local businesses such as hotels, transport services and shops. The addition of a new travel experience will not only boost revenue but also encourage longer stays by visitors, contributing to the regional economy.
With its strategic location, natural beauty and high tourist footfall, the Kalyani Dam aerodrome is likely to become a signature attraction for Tirupati. Once operational, it will redefine the city’s tourism landscape by offering a combination of devotion, heritage and adventure.
