India caved against left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner once again as he finished with 13 wickets and New Zealand inflicted a 113-run defeat on the hosts in Pune. In the process, New Zealand won their first-ever series and ended India's home dominance that stretched back to 2012.
India vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 3 Highlights: The last thing India would have wanted was Virat Kohli getting out on the final delivery of Day 3 in the ongoing Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan were going strong in the middle and had added 136 runs for the third wicket before Glenn Phillips provided New Zealand with a much needed breakthrough. Phillips removed Kohli for 70 as India finished the day at 231/3, still trailing by 125 runs. Sarfaraz is present in the middle and is batting at 70. He will lead India's fight on Day 4. Earlier, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a decent start in the second innings after New Zealand piled a massive 402 on the board, taking a lead of 356 runs. The pair added a 50-plus stand but India lost both openers post Tea. Ajaz Patel injected both blows as Yashasvi was stumped for 35, while Rohit got out at 52. Kohli and Sarfaraz then shouldered the responsibility and completed their respective half-centuries. Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra scored a sensational ton to put New Zealand in the driver seat. Ravindra was the last Kiwi batter to be dismissed for 134(157). He stitched a century-plus stand with Tim Southee for the 8th wicket, taking the match away from India's grip. This was Ravindra's second Test ton. Mohammed Siraj ended Southee's stay in the middle for 65. India had resumed Day 3 on a strong note with Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah striking early. Siraj removed Daryl Mitchell for 18, who was caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully. Bumrah then got rid of Tom Blundell. Ravindra Jadeja then made two inroads. The pair of Ravindra and Mitchell had started the day from the overnight score of 180/3, when the lead was 134 runs. Day 2 had witnessed an epic collapse as India were skittled for 46, which is the country's third lowest total in Tests. Five Indian batters (Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin) got out for ducks. The opening day of the match was washed out entirely due to rain.
