Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI is looking to make its chatbot Grok sound a little more familiar and a lot more local. The company has announced that it is hiring native Hindi and Bengali speakers, along with speakers of a few other global languages, to help train Grok and make it feel less like a machine and more like “your neighbour.”
The announcement was made by Ayush Jaiswal from xAI in a post on X, where he said the company is actively searching for native speakers of Hindi, Bengali, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin and Indonesian. The goal, according to Jaiswal, is simple: help Grok understand how people actually speak, joke, argue and think in their own languages.
What makes the role interesting is that applicants do not need any prior experience in artificial intelligence or model training. In fact, Jaiswal said knowing nothing about AI could even be a good thing. He described the role as a hands-on way to learn how AI systems are trained, while also shaping how Grok communicates with users. Along with the announcement, he shared a link for interested candidates to apply.
The move comes at a time when India is becoming a key focus for global AI companies. Players like Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have all been rolling out new tools, features and more affordable plans aimed at Indian users. With millions of people using AI tools in regional languages, the race to sound more “local” is heating up.
Grok, which is closely tied to Musk’s vision for AI, has already found a loyal following in India. On X, users frequently tag the chatbot into conversations to settle political arguments, ask about historical events, decode viral gossip or simply get a quick take on trending topics. Many of these questions are asked in Hindi, Bengali or a mix of languages, highlighting why xAI wants Grok to better understand regional speech and context.
However, the hiring announcement also comes at a tricky time for the company. Grok has recently landed xAI in regulatory trouble after the chatbot generated non-consensual sexualised images of women and children in response to user prompts. The incidents have raised fresh concerns around safety, moderation and responsibility in AI systems.
As xAI pushes to humanise Grok and expand its reach in markets like India, it will have to balance sounding like a friendly neighbour with ensuring the chatbot remains safe, ethical and firmly under control.
