X has effectively abandoned the Mac. After killing its dedicated macOS app last year, the company has now blocked users from installing the iPad version of X on Apple Silicon Macs, cutting off the last native app option for Mac users, according to a report by 9to5Mac.
When X removed its Mac app from the Mac App Store, it directed users towards the iPad version, which could still be installed on Macs running Apple Silicon. That workaround is no longer available, as per the report. The Mac App Store listing for the iPad version of X now states that the app is not supported on macOS, confirming that the company has opted out of Apple’s cross-platform app system.
One of the key advantages of Apple Silicon Macs is their ability to run iPhone and iPad apps natively. Developers can choose to disable this functionality, and that is precisely what X has done. The result is that Mac users no longer have any official app-based way to access the service.
The decision is not entirely surprising. The iPad version of X had been steadily degrading on macOS for months. Search has been largely unusable, while opening links often triggers an error message stating, “Uh oh, an error was encountered.” The experience has been unreliable enough that many users were already defaulting to the web.
For those who already have the iPad app installed on their Mac, it will continue to run for now, at least in its partially broken state. New installs, however, are no longer possible. To access the full feature set, users are now forced to rely on the browser version through Safari, Chrome, or another web browser.
The move also fits a broader pattern. Under its current leadership, X has repeatedly deprioritised desktop users, while also restricting or shutting down third-party Mac apps that previously filled gaps left by the official software. Cutting off macOS support altogether further narrows how users can engage with the platform outside mobile devices.
It is possible that X has temporarily disabled Mac support for the iPad app while attempting to address some of its technical issues. For now, though, there is no indication that a proper Mac solution is on the way.
