The recently concluded The Game Awards 2025 ceremony saw the announcements of major new video game projects. Lucasfilm’s "Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic" was among the unexpected and huge game announcements. Here are 10 things you should know about the upcoming Star Wars game.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic (nostalgic gamers would prefer to call it “FOTOR”) is a narrative-driven choice-based single-player role-playing game. It is the first game in the single-player Star Wars RPG series since 2003’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR).

Though it is a new game in the series, Fate of the Old Republic (FOTOR) is not a sequel or a continuation to Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). It could be called a spiritual successor to KOTOR.

KOTOR and Mass Effect trilogy game director Casey Hudson is back in the chair for FOTOR and will oversee development on the game.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will be developed by the newly-formed Arcanaut Studios, in partnership with Lucasfilm Games. Game director Casey Hudson co-founded Arcanaut Studios this year itself.

In Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, you will play as a Force user who is “on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth.” As a Force user, “every decision deepens your journey toward light or darkness”, says the game description.

Fate of the Old Republic features a brand new Star Wars story that will introduce new characters to its sci-fi mythos.

Details on the story of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic are scant for the nonce. In an exclusive interview with Kristin Baver, editor-in-chief of StarWars.com, Casey Hudson said that FOTOR will have an “all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is still in early development, Casey Hudson said in the exclusive interview.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic platforms have not been specifically confirmed yet. Most likely, you’ll see it launching on PC and consoles.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, fans should not expect Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic to launch before 2030 since the studio tasked with its development was formed this year only. Casey Hudson, however, assures that FOTOR will come out earlier than its claimed release timeline. The game director of KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy said in a statement on X: "Don't worry about the 'not until 2030' rumors. The game will be out before then. I'm not getting any younger!"
