Spotify is down for several hours, but only for these specific users

Popular music streaming platform Spotify is going through an outage rendering thousands of users unable to stream and listen to music and podcasts on the platform. Several users have reported facing issues with the streaming platform on the social media platform X. Along with this down detector has also registered several reports about the music streaming platform not working.

According to several reports on X, users are reporting that their modded version of the Spotify app has stopped working all of a sudden. Most reports on X are from users who were using the Spotify Mod app.

A user wrote, “fr they took down all the Spotify mod apks”. Another user mentioned, “So Spotify really took down all the modded apk versions of it. Still ain't gonna buy premium f**k capitalism(maybe manifest it idk)”.

As of now, there’s no official information available on whether Spotify has intentionally stopped the Spotify mod apps. But, considering most users’ reports are from those who were using the modded version, it is very much possible that Spotify might have taken down all the tweaked versions of the app.

Now, this move can be crucial as Spotify might want people to buy the premium membership instead of using it for free via the modded versions of the app that have been circulating on the internet for years.

Modded apps are altered versions of original applications, offering unlocked features, ad-free usage, and enhanced functionalities like free Premium membership, ad-free experience, etc. Commonly used for games and streaming apps, they pose risks like security threats, legal issues, and lack of updates. While appealing, they violate terms of service and may include malicious code.

Downdetector, the crowdsourced platform that reports an ongoing outage of a website, app and services, has also received several complaints about Spotify not working. According to the report, around 51% of users are facing issues with audio streaming and 35% are facing issues with the Spotify app.
