Software engineering jobs may be heading for a major shake-up sooner than expected. According to Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, artificial intelligence could replace most software coding tasks within the next six to twelve months.
Amodei made the comments while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, during a session focused on how AI could reshape work and society. He said that inside Anthropic, engineers have already changed how they work. Instead of writing code line by line, many now rely on AI models to generate code and then spend their time reviewing and adjusting it.
According to Amodei, this approach is already saving time and speeding up development. He added that the next step, where AI handles the entire coding process from start to finish, may not be far away. In his view, models are improving so quickly that they could soon perform nearly everything a software engineer does.
The remarks have raised fresh concerns about job security in the tech industry. Coding has long been seen as a stable and valuable skill, but AI tools are making it easier for people without formal training to build software. New tools allow users to describe what they want in plain language, while AI takes care of writing the actual code.
Amodei also spoke about the pace of progress in AI more broadly. He acknowledged that predicting exact timelines is difficult, but said the speed of improvement continues to surprise even people working closely with the technology. Better AI-written code and faster research cycles are pushing development ahead, even if hardware and chip production still take time.
The discussion included other industry leaders, such as Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, and focused on how AI could affect jobs across many fields, not just technology.
Anthropic’s own AI model, Claude, has played a big role in this shift. Over the past year, it has evolved from a simple chatbot into a tool that can assist with writing, editing, and testing code, as well as handling basic computer tasks.
While some experts believe AI will mainly help engineers work faster, others worry that entry-level software jobs could be hit first. Amodei’s comments suggest that for many developers, the impact of AI may arrive much sooner than expected.
