Samsung SmartThings becomes first platform to support Matter-compatible cameras

Samsung has announced a major expansion of its smart home platform, confirming that SmartThings now supports Matter 1.5, the latest version of the global smart home standard. With this update, SmartThings becomes the first platform in the industry to enable Matter-compatible cameras, marking an important milestone for the wider Matter ecosystem and for users looking to simplify their connected home setups.

The update significantly broadens what Matter can do inside a real-world smart home. Until now, Matter support has largely focused on foundational device categories such as lights, switches, plugs, door locks and sensors. Camera support has been one of the most requested additions, and its arrival in Matter 1.5 signals a shift towards more complex and security-focused devices becoming part of the standard.

Samsung says camera support will begin rolling out to SmartThings later this month as part of its existing Matter-enabled framework. With this move, SmartThings now claims the widest range of Matter device support available on any single platform, strengthening its position as a central hub for multi-brand smart homes.

Matter 1.5 was officially introduced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in November and represents a meaningful upgrade over previous versions. In addition to cameras, the update adds improved support for devices such as blinds, awnings and garage doors, alongside refinements to energy management features. However, camera integration is widely seen as the headline addition, as it enables use cases that go far beyond basic automation.

With Matter-compatible cameras supported, SmartThings users will be able to connect indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells and other camera-based devices directly through the platform. Core features include live video streaming, two-way audio communication, motion detection, event history tracking and pan-tilt-zoom controls where supported by the hardware. Importantly, these capabilities can be accessed without manufacturers needing to rely on proprietary integrations or separate application programming interfaces.

Samsung says it has already been working closely with several partners to bring Matter cameras to market. Companies including Aqara, Eve and Ulticam are collaborating with Samsung on Matter-based camera products, with launches expected around March 2026. The use of Matter means these cameras should work seamlessly across compatible platforms, reducing setup complexity and improving long-term interoperability.

At the same time, SmartThings continues to support a broad range of camera brands through existing partnerships. The platform already works with products from Arlo, Hue, Ring and Aqara, allowing users to mix Matter and non-Matter devices within the same smart home environment. This hybrid approach is likely to appeal to users who already own cameras while still wanting the benefits of the newer standard.
