Housemarque, developer of sci-fi roguelike PS5 shooter Returnal, has announced its next game, titled ‘Saros’. It is a single-player third-person action game built around the core gameplay mechanics of Returnal, only that the Finland-based developer aims to give Saros a more “evolved” third-person gameplay compared to Returnal. In their own words, after Returnal, they “decided to create a new IP which evolves our deep third-person action and mysterious storytelling”. The result is Saros.
“Saros is an action game with the haunting story of a lost off-world colony on Carcosa under an ominous eclipse. You play as Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer who will stop at nothing to find who he is looking for”, the developers said in a post on the PlayStation Blog.
In Saros, the developers at Housemarque wanted to “create an emotional and powerful character study that explores the cost it takes to create a new future”.
The game world of Saros features many NPCs, details of which will be revealed in due course of time.
If you die in Saros, it does not affect your resources and progression meaning you don’t have to worry about starting from scratch. That is one key difference between the gameplay of Returnal and Saros.
“After every death, you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades”, the developers said in the blog post.
In Saros, after every death, you always come back stronger.
Housemarque plans to release Saros on PS5 and PS5 Pro in 2026. We will get the first look at Saros’ extended gameplay later in 2025.
