Over 2 lakh power banks recalled in the US after fire incidents: How to check if yours is affected

Over 200,000 Inui BI-B41 power banks sold via Amazon USA have been recalled after causing fires. Only four serial numbers are affected, and owners must stop using the devices and follow the official refund and disposal process.

Roughly 210,000 Inui BI-B41 portable power banks sold exclusively through Amazon USA have been recalled after being linked to at least 11 fire incidents, along with injuries and property damage, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The budget power bank, priced at around $18, is now flagged as a safety risk due to defective lithium-ion batteries.

Here’s how to find out if your device is part of the recall.

Start by checking the model number printed on the back of the unit. Only the Inui BI-B41 model is affected. If you have the correct model number, look for the serial number (SN) on the rear panel. Four serial numbers fall under the recall: 000G21, 000H21, 000I21 and 000L21. If your power bank carries any of these SNs, it must be taken out of use immediately. Units with other serial numbers are not part of the recall.

If your power bank is affected, stop using and charging it right away. Store it in a cool, dry place to minimise risk. You must then visit the company’s recall page and follow the steps to claim a refund. Once your claim is approved, the device must be disposed of safely. The CPSC stresses that these batteries cannot go into household rubbish, curbside recycling or standard used-battery bins at retail stores. Faulty lithium-ion batteries require specialised disposal through designated hazardous-waste channels.

The recall underscores the rising risks associated with low-cost lithium-ion products sold online, especially when they have not undergone sufficient safety testing. Anyone with an Inui BI-B41 should check their unit immediately.
