Meta thinks its AI slop deserves its own platform, may launch a new app

Meta is developing a standalone app for Vibes, its feed of AI-generated videos, as it looks to capitalise on growing interest in generative content. Currently part of the Meta AI app, Vibes could soon become a dedicated product, reflecting Meta’s belief that AI-made video will be a major driver of engagement.

  • A dedicated Vibes app aims to offer a more focused and immersive experience

Meta is working on a standalone app for Vibes, its feed of AI-generated videos, as the company pushes further into AI-first social experiences. The plans were first reported by TechCrunch and Platformer.

Vibes launched in September 2025 as a feature inside the Meta AI app. The product allows users to prompt Meta AI to generate short, vertical videos in a TikTok-style format, similar to what OpenAI offers through its Sora app. Now, Meta appears ready to give Vibes a home of its own.

“Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta said in a statement. The company added that users are increasingly using the feature to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends, and that a separate app would offer a more focused and immersive experience.

Meta has not disclosed how many people are actively using Vibes, but it has said that overall usage of Meta AI has continued to grow since the feature was introduced. Spinning Vibes out into a standalone app would give Meta more freedom to expand its capabilities without overloading the existing Meta AI interface.

The move also fits with Meta’s broader strategy around AI-generated content. During an earnings call in October 2025, the company said it planned to surface more AI-generated images and videos across its platforms via its recommendation systems. A dedicated Vibes app could serve as both a creation tool and a pipeline for that content.

Competition in this space is heating up. OpenAI has continued to iterate on Sora as an AI-first social video product, adding features such as character and pet cameos, and signing a deal with Disney that allows users to generate videos featuring Disney characters. Given Meta’s history of licensing celebrity likenesses, similar partnerships would not be out of character.

While it remains unclear how aggressively Meta will push Vibes as a standalone product, the direction of travel is clear. AI-generated video is moving from novelty to core format, and Meta appears determined to make sure it has a prominent role in whatever social platforms look like next.
