  • Radikaa Sarathkumar praised for her lead role as Pavunuthaayi
  • Director Sivakumar Murugesan debuts with a comedy-rural drama

Tamil movies have been trying to find a major blockbuster in theaters since 2026, and Thaai Kizhavi, suddenly, has become a blockbuster hit.

Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan and produced by Sivakarthikeyan, the film stars Radikaa Sarathkumar in the lead and she is receiving praises for her performance.

This movie is a rural drama that keeps people fascinated with humour, emotion, and social commentary while also carrying a strong message. Well, here is what is so special about the film that it is rewriting the history of women centric films in Tamil. Also, the film has already collected Rs 50 crore at the box office.

On its opening day,  Thaai Kizhavi collected Rs 2.65Cr but Day 2 saw a jump and it collected Rs 5 crore on Saturday. On Sunday the movie registered good numbers and earned Rs 6.15 cr. The movie is going strong on the weekends all thanks to good word of mouth.

Radhika Sarathkumar, at 63, has played a character called Pavunuthaayi, easily balancing strength and warmth. Her presence lends the tale depth and keeps the movie real.

While people have never expected that someone of her stature would be doing this film, Sivakarthikeyan and team has convinced her enough for the role and she has nailed it.

Besides the salary, the producers have even offered her a share from the profits to its female actors. Also, this would have been impossible if an actor-turned-producer Sivakarthikeyan did not trust the director and the actors. He believed in the story and the new talent and has encouraged them to deliver such a hit.

Sivakumar Murugesan made his directorial debut with Thaai Kizhavi. He has perfectly blended comedy with social commentary, a novel thing that isn't commonly seen in popular country dramas.

Thaai Kizhavi is a hilarious and emotional movie with a lot of heart. The movie has funny and serious sections because it has a fascinating tale, vivid characters, and a powerful core performance by Radhika Sarathkumar.

Sivakumar Murugesan, a potential new filmmaker for Tamil cinema, also makes his debut in the movie. In the years to follow, he could breathe new life into popular stories.

A bustling place in the country

Radhika Sarathkumar plays Pavunuthaayi in the movie, which is set in the made-up village of Karumathur. People in the community are scared of and respect her since she is an old woman who is strong and dangerous. As a moneylender, she is known for being harsh. Every day, she wanders through town to collect payments from people who owe her money.

Pavunuthaayi is strict, yet she also cares a lot about people. Her daughter Suruli and her eccentric family, which includes her reckless boys and a bunch of locals that are equally as colorful, are the most important things in her life. The movie progressively shows itself through the amusing things that happen around the characters and how they interact with each other.

An essential but humorous thought

The scenario gets more fascinating when Pavunuthaayi suddenly gets unwell and has to stay in bed. When family members get to know about her illness, her three estranged sons, played by Aruldoss, Singampuli, and Bala Saravanan, return. They return not for their mother's love but for her money.  What happens from here forms the crux of the story. It is a comical but insightful look at greed, familial ties, and what genuine riches is.

Strong and humorous writing

The writing of Thaai Kizhavi is one of the most beautiful things about it. Sivakumar Murugesan, the director, builds a vibrant world with weird characters and scenes that stick in your mind. The comedy moves rapidly, and there are a lot of funny parts that make you laugh out loud because they fit the context instead of being forced.

The script, on the other hand, doesn't forget about the emotional heart of the story. Even though it's hilarious, the story is about family values, social duty, and treating women with respect.
