Meta is reportedly preparing to launch its new display-equipped smart glasses next month at a lower price than initially expected, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The wearable, codenamed Hypernova, is expected to be a high-end version of the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, featuring a small display at the bottom of the right lens. This display will be visible only to the wearer and can be controlled using a wrist accessory called Ceres, which Meta first teased in 2022.

The Hypernova glasses will run on a customised version of Android and will be powered by a Qualcomm chip. The home screen is expected to feature horizontally laid-out apps, including dedicated applications for the camera, gallery, and AI functions. For smoother navigation, the glasses will include capacitive touch controls on either side, allowing users to interact without relying on external devices.

Earlier reports in April suggested that Hypernova could cost between $1000 and $1400 at launch, but sources familiar with the development told Bloomberg that Meta has significantly reduced the price to encourage adoption. The new starting price is $800, equivalent to the cost of the iPhone 16. Users who want style variations or prescription lenses will need to pay extra for these options.

The launch of Hypernova highlights Meta’s continued push into augmented reality and wearable technology. By integrating a display directly into the glasses, the company aims to offer a more immersive and private experience for users. The wrist accessory, Ceres, provides additional control and interaction, expanding the functionality of the wearable beyond what was possible with previous Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

With a lower starting price, Meta appears to be positioning Hypernova as a premium but accessible device, aiming to attract both tech enthusiasts and mainstream consumers interested in augmented reality. The combination of AI features, a dedicated display, and seamless touch controls may set the Hypernova apart from existing smart glasses on the market.

The device is also expected to support a wide range of apps, enhancing its utility for everyday tasks such as photography, media viewing, and personal productivity. Analysts suggest that Meta’s strategy of reducing the launch price could help boost adoption rates and establish the glasses as a must-have wearable for the next wave of AR technology.
