With the macOS 15.1 update, Apple has introduced a feature allowing users to install apps on external storage. This update helps users manage storage effectively, especially on Macs with limited internal storage. Here’s a guide to setting up and using this feature, along with important considerations.

Steps to install apps on external storage

• Connect the External Drive Plug in an external drive formatted in APFS to your Mac. Open the App Store Launch the App Store on your Mac. Enable External Installation Click App Store in the menu bar and select Settings. Check the box labelled Download and install large apps to a separate disk. Choose the Drive From the dropdown menu, select your connected external drive.

Install Apps

You can install apps requiring more than 1GB of storage on the selected external drive when downloading them.

Things to keep in mind

Storage Format

The external drive must be formatted in APFS for compatibility.

1GB Storage Requirement

Only apps requiring more than 1GB can be installed on an external drive. Smaller apps will still use the internal storage.

Partial Installation

Some parts of the app may still be installed on the internal drive for smoother performance.

Drive Connection

The external drive must remain connected to use the installed apps. Disconnecting the drive will temporarily disable the apps.
