In recent updates, Instagram has introduced HDR (High Dynamic Range) video playback, which can sometimes cause a sudden increase in screen brightness when watching videos on the app. While HDR enhances the visual quality of videos, it can be overwhelming, especially in low-light conditions.
If you've experienced discomfort due to the auto HDR video playback on Instagram, particularly on iPhone devices, you can disable this feature to restore a more balanced viewing experience.
Disable HDR video playback on Instagram on iPhone
For iPhone users, listed below are the steps to be followed to disable HDR video playback on Instagram:
Go to your profile on Instagram.
Tap on the hamburger menu located on the top right corner.
Select "Your Account" or "Settings."
Choose "Media Quality" from the options.
Toggle the "Disable HDR video playback" option to turn it on.
Once disabled, Instagram will play HDR videos in SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) format, reducing the brightness and offering a more comfortable viewing experience.
It's important to note that disabling HDR video playback does not affect HDR photos on Instagram. HDR photos will continue to display in their full dynamic range with higher brightness settings.
Supported Apple phones for HDR video playback
The following iPhone models support HDR video playback on Instagram:
iPhone 12 series
iPhone 13 series
iPhone 14 series
