Google appears ready to take its AI ambitions further onto the desktop, with a macOS version of Gemini reportedly in testing.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the company is trialling the app with users outside Google—usually a sign that a broader rollout isn’t too far off. If it launches, Gemini would finally get a proper desktop presence, putting it in more direct competition with ChatGPT and Claude, both of which already offer dedicated Mac apps.
On the surface, the Gemini app doesn’t seem dramatically different from what’s already available on the web. It can respond to prompts, generate text and images, write code, and pull information from the internet. But the more interesting bit is what Google is reportedly testing under the hood.
A feature called “Desktop Intelligence” could allow Gemini to understand what’s happening on your screen—essentially giving it context from other apps and ongoing tasks. In simple terms, it’s the same direction competitors are heading in: AI that doesn’t just answer questions, but actually understands your workflow.
Both ChatGPT and Claude already do versions of this on macOS, letting users reference on-screen content or interact more closely with apps. The open question is how far Google plans to take it. Will Gemini just “see” what’s on screen, or will it eventually act on it—opening files, editing documents, or completing tasks?
Google has already tested similar capabilities on smartphones, so extending that to desktop isn’t a huge leap.
There’s also a broader layer to this. Thanks to the partnership between Apple and Google, Gemini’s models are expected to power parts of Apple’s AI push, including a revamped Siri experience. That means even if the standalone Mac app takes time, the underlying tech is already on its way into the ecosystem.
